The Black Box

The Black Box

Nestled down a quiet side street off of Old Street in East London is this fantastic Live/ Work space by Marta Nowicka & Co.

The original lithographic printers warehouse has been diced up to create 2 x two bed flats and a large three bedroomed mews style townhouse. During the conversion, a large basement was dug out beneath the building and the black box added on top to create a fantastic open plan living space.

It was a structural headache for the builders who had to tie the existing shell of the building to a new internal steel frame skeleton.  Looking down the street you can still see the facade teetering to one side – but all is well!!

Inside is a mixture of new shuttered concrete, original warehouse brick walls, steel staircases and lots and lots of glass.

The Black Box has been thoughtfully designed to screen certain views while maximising others, such as the view of St Lukes Church Spire lit up in a variety of colours at night.

See more of Marta’s work here or if you would like to rent the property check it out on One Fine Stay.
